What Is Citrulline?

Citrulline is a nonessential amino acid found primarily in watermelon, cucumbers, and other melons. It serves as an endogenous precursor to arginine, thereby enhancing nitric oxide synthesis through what is known as the arginine-nitric oxide pathway. Who doesn’t want an impressive pump after a tough workout? Don’t you want to be able to show off the fruits of your labor? Even if aesthetics aren’t your top priority, there are plenty of other reasons to take a supplement that contains a pump-enhancing ingredient like Citrulline.

Is Citrulline Safe and Effective?

Citrulline has generally shown a great track record for safety and tolerability. Although some individuals may experience mild stomach discomfort, this is not typically reported at moderate dosages.

As for performance enhancement, while findings are far from universal, several studies have concluded that citrulline malate supplementation can enhance exercise performance and recovery.

Beta Alanine - 3200 mg

Beta-alanine has been shown to enhance muscular endurance. Many people report being able to perform one or two additional reps in the gym when training in sets of 8–15 repetitions. Beta-alanine supplementation can also improve moderate- to high-intensity cardiovascular exercise performance, like rowing or sprinting. 

Research shows that just 1.6g/day delivered results, with added benefits seen at the higher doses. The strongest clinical studies on Beta-Alanine point to 3.2g+ of Beta-Alanine per day.

Large doses of beta-alanine may cause a tingling feeling called paresthesia. It is a harmless side effect.

Taurine - 1000 mg

Does Taurine Boost Energy?
“Absolutely not,” says Kurtis Frank, the research director for the independent nutrition research organization Examine.com. “If anything, it may be mildly suppressive when it comes to the neurological system. It may have been added to energy drinks initially since it may cause a glucose spike to be more rounded. Less spike means more time until it normalizes in the blood, thereby mitigating the sugar crash.

So the fact that it reduces the acute effect of energy drinks may in fact be why it’s such a great inclusion in energy drinks: it makes the effect less of a jolt and crash and reduces jitteriness, helping to keep you more effective and productive. For that reason (and that reason alone), some people find it comparable to theanine with regards to its ability to make the effects of caffeine more enjoyable.

A study of endurance athletes showed that cyclists who supplemented with taurine burned more fat than carbohydrates to fuel their ride. This is good news because fats are a more efficient form of energy than carbs, and the average person has a nearly limitless supply (roughly 100,000 calories) of fat stored in their bodies.

Taurine is considered safe with doses up to 3,000 milligrams per day. It can be taken on its own as a supplement, or more commonly, as part of an energy drink.

L-Tyrosine - 750 mg

What is L-tyrosine?

L-Tyrosine is an amino acid found in the diet that is metabolized to produce catecholamines such as dopamine and adrenaline. It is also used in the production of thyroid hormones. For these reasons, preworkout supplements often include it.

L-Tyrosine is a free-form amino acid which rapidly crosses the blood-brain barrier. With regards to performance, tyrosine’s main benefit is its ability to increase the synthesis of multiple neurotransmitters and enhance dopamine, epinephrine and norepinephrine levels. Studies have found that tyrosine supplementation can improve mood and enhance focus.

L-Tyrosine tends to be taken in doses of 500-2000mg approximately 30-60 minutes before any acute stressor (this tends to be exercise)

Caffeine - 250 mg

Caffeine is a powerful stimulant, and it can be used to improve physical strength and endurance. It is classified as a nootropic because it sensitizes neurons and provides mental stimulation.

L-Theanine - 100 mg

What is L-theanine?

L-Theanine is an amino acid that is not common in the diet and not one of the essential amino acids or even one of the common nonessential amino acids. It is found in meaningful amounts in tea, but otherwise supplementation is the main source of it.

The relaxing and attention promoting properties of L-theanine coupled with the lack of sedation may have its most significant supplemental role in attenuating the ‘edge’ of many stimulants. A combination of theanine with caffeine (200mg each) is noted to be synergistic in promoting cognition and attention.

    Flavour was really good. Like the fact that you can taste lemon and not just strawberry. Nice combo. Mixability was good, few bits at bottom but they soon mixed in near the end of me drinking it. Energy and focus was great.
